The International Brain Research Foundation's
first collaboration was at the NYU-Bellevue Medical Center.
This joint effort resulted in a Neuropsychiatric Advanced Care Unit
(NACU) for state-of-the-art treatment of coma and disorders of
consciousness. Under the auspices of the Foundation, the NACU observed,
investigated, and treated brain insults resulting in coma, persistent
vegetative state (PVS), minimally conscious state (MCS) and severe
cognitive impairments (SCI).
Some of the treatment protocols were Neuropsychopharmacology and
Peripheral Nerve Stimulation, with the goal being to develop Best
Practice Models to advance the care and treatment of brain-injured
patients.
IBRF is currently collaborating with the Neurosurgery Department of the
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) to
establish a second NACU site. This collaboration will result in a
consortium of 14 Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) in New Jersey being
organized to accept patients and continue their care.

IBRF and UMDNJ are developing the concept for an advanced
Neurotrauma Center that will facilitate rapid intervention for
traumatic brain injury and stroke syndromes.
The next major area of concern on IBRF’s research agenda focuses on
Autism Spectrum Disorders. In partnership with the American Academy of
Sciences, a task force has been developed to design a blueprint for
translational research within this group of disorders.
